One of the most awaited smartphones of the year, the OnePlus 5 is finally here. The company had been teasing this device for quite a long time. There have been a number of leaks too. The phone has finally come out after a long wait. It was announced at a grand event today which was streamed live all over the world. The cat is finally out of the bag. Let us take a look at what the features of OnePlus 5 are:

While we did know a lot about the OnePlus 5 already, thanks to the leaks and teasers, the phone did have quite a few surprises packed in. Let us take a look at what makes the device so special:

Design

The latest OnePlus smartphone comes out into the markets with a design that resembles the iPhone 7 a lot. It also looks similar to the Oppo R11 and Oppo R11 Plus which were announced last week. The phone offers a large front panel where the phone features a home button in the front, which comes with a fingerprint scanner on top. The fingerprint scanner is made of ceramic and it can unlock a device in as less as 0.2 seconds!

On the back it features dual cameras on the top left corner. There’s a OnePlus logo placed in the center. The phone comes in Midnight Black and Slate Gray color variants. It offers a 3.5mm jack on the bottom, along with a USB Type-C port. The phone is the slimmest OnePlus device ever created, as comes out at just 7.25mm. There are antenna bands present on the back.

Display

The display of the device was a slight let down. While many were expecting a higher resolution, the phone offers the same old 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution. It offers a 5.5 inched AMOLED display.

Specifications and OS

OnePlus will release their latest smartphone running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, clocked in at 2.45 GHz. Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs was also present at the event to announce the fact that the OnePlus 5 runs on the Snapdragon 835 processor. The OnePlus 5 comes out into the markets in two variants - one that features 6GB of RAM along with 64GB of storage space, while the other variant offers an incredible 8GB of RAM along with 128GB of storage.

The phone supports Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, as well as NFC support. It runs on the Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS, with the OxygenOS on top. The OxygenOS that powers the OnePlus 5 smartphone comes with many new features. These features include the likes of taking expanded screenshots - which allow you to capture an entire, scrollable section of the screen in one image.

OnePlus 5 users can adjust the priority of apps, where important apps can make use of the processing power in a better manner compared to dormant apps.

Camera

Battery Life

OnePlus mentioned that the RAM on this phone is optimized in a manner that less energy is consumed. OnePlus did a demonstration of the charging speeds - they compared the OnePlus 5 against a Samsung Galaxy S8, where the OnePlus 5 charged 58% in 30 minutes, while the Samsung Galaxy S8 charged only 39%.

Pricing

OnePlus also announced the pricing of their latest smartphone at the event. While there have already been over 500,000 registration in China itself, the phone gets a global release on the 27th of June, starting when the US and Europe based users would also be able to buy it.

  • The 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant is priced in at $479 in the US and EUR 499 in Europe.
  • The 8GB RAM/128GB storage variant is priced in at $550 in the US and EUR 579 in the Europe.
