Among some of the biggest names in the world of technology, Facebook has brought forward a number of changes to the markets as we know them to be. The company, over the years, has innovated the way social media functions, and has taken it to a whole new level. The social media giant, some time ago launched the Facebook Trends. It has been quite a while since they were launched. However, today they’ve received a major change – the description below it is gone, and the trends now appear based on the number of people talking about it.

This brings a much needed autonomy in trends. There were many instances when trends handpicked by Facebook turned out to be rather absurd. However, with this new update, things look much more organized now. The announcement came late yesterday, stating that Facebook is now doing away with the descriptions for the Facebook Trends. This was one of the main tasks that the Facebook editorial team used to handle up until now.

The company commented on how their new system of trending topics works, saying “This is based on the number of original posts that mention the topic and shares of posts about the topic. A more algorithmically driven process allows us to scale Trending to cover more topics and make it available to more people globally over time.”

However, while Facebook has indeed tried to automate the process, they have also stated that there are still people involved in this. The role of these people is to ensure that the topics that appear on Facebook Trends are high-quality topics and not something that people usually talk about like #dinner. The people involved are just there for the quality assurance purposes and no longer have any role in determining the trends. This brings in a much needed autonomy  in the Facebook Trends, and is a welcome move from the social media giant.
